The United States Coast Guard was created by Congress in 1790 and called the Revenue-Marine. It is the oldest seagoing service of the United States. The Revenue-Marine purpose was to collect custom duties at seaports. Today's Coast Guard is the merger of the Revenue-Marine and the Life-Saving Service in 1915. The Coast Guard carries out three roles, Maritime Safety, Maritime Security and Maritime Stewardship. As of 2018, the Coast Guard has a workforce of over 80,000. It has more than 240 coastal patrol ships, tenders, tug and more, including 200 helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. Coast Guard Moto: Semper Paratus - Always Ready.
