The United States Marine Corps was formed back in 1775 as the Continental Marines which was formed by two battalions of Marines. They served as a branch of the Infantry troops who fight at sea and land. The Marine Corps became part of the Department of Navy in 1834. Marines serve aboard Navy battleships and aircraft carriers as the ships landing force, manning the ships weapons and providing shipboard security. The US Marines serve as the first units on the ground in most cases. The Marines are a ground, aviation and amphibious military force unit.
