Brown Water Navy Vietnam Challenge Coin. This Coin is 1.5 diameter or 38mm. The term "brown water navy" refers to a naval force capable of military operations in littoral zone waters, such as rivers and coasts. Originating during the American Civil War, it described Union forces patrolling the Mississippi River with small gunboats and patrol boats. These forces are distinguished from blue-water navies that operate in open oceans and green-water navies that operate in brackish estuaries and littoral coasts. Brown water navies played significant roles in various historical conflicts, including the Vietnam War, where they were crucial in riverine operations.
